When the Dot NET universal top-level domain name extension was initially introduced in 1985, together with the first domain extensions on the World Wide Web, it was meant to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure establishments. Considering that there were no particular requirements about the usage of the top-level domain, though, dot NET domains were acquired and used for various purposes and by a great number of people. This domain extension represents a good substitute of .COM, especially if the necessary domain with the latter TLD is not available for registration.
